Music Industry Accuses AI Firms of Mass Copyright Infringement
The International Confederation of Music Publishers (ICMP), representing major record labels and music professionals, has launched a sweeping condemnation of AI companies for unauthorized use of copyrighted material. After a two-year investigation, the Brussels-based group alleges firms like OpenAI, Suno, Udio, and Mistral engaged in systematic copyright violation by training models on artists' works without compensation.
Generative AI platforms now replicate distinctive vocal styles and musical arrangements from iconic acts including the Beatles and Mariah Carey. "This constitutes the largest copyright infringement exercise we've witnessed," said ICMP director general John Phelan, emphasizing that corporate decisions—not the technology itself—determine legal boundaries.
